I've invested $16,062 in courses and training in the Ecommerce and Copywriting Space.
Since 2021, I've spent a total $208,248.16 of my own money learning the ropes of Business at the School of Hard Knocks. (As of 11/20/24)
At $69,416.05 per year in tuition, I think the Gods of Business went easy on me.
At first, I thought I was going to be a Mechanical Engineer. My dad was in aerospace. I thought mechanical engineering was harder, so I chose that path.
My high school transcripts didn't really help. I had to fight tooth and nail to get a spot in engineering. Back against the wall, I crushed it. I did way better than I expected.
There was a problem though...
1. I needed money
2. It was impossible for me to get myself to get a "normal" job while in college. I needed all my time to study.
3. I was not about to beg my parents for money. I had too much dignity.
After praying to God because I didn't know what else to do...
My first business ever was selling carpenter bee traps in parking lots around Northern Kentucky. I got shut down because, apparently, the other sellers didn't like that I was uppercutting them on prices. They couldn't compete with a broke 19-year-old who refused to get a real job while in college because studying was more important. They couldn't compete with $3 margins, lol. My listings were taken down and I lost all momentum.
God laughed because he knew this first taste of business would get me addicted.
So I prayed again and hoped for the best... (it worked every time)
After being forced out of that, I wanted to keep selling online. I found Alibaba and started selling boring white label products with a twist. Not really drop shipping, but the same idea. I bought samples orders for $100-$200 and tested the hard way. Mainly because I knew how important fast shipping is. It was worth the extra cost of shipping (more positive feedback = more push from the algorithm). Before buying, I'd make sure there were ways to market them differently. Some products took off to the moon. Many failed. I dropped out of Mechanical Engineering to grow this business and never looked back.
I realized I had an edge at this thing... creatively marketing products. Differentiating them from the masses of options. I still have my templates for reporting to Facebook when someone ripped me off the picture for picture, word for word, because it happened so often.
This past year I've taken on more work than I ever have in copywriting.
I think I'll do this for 7 ish years and then start hitting heavier with the money printing skills. Acquisitions sounds cool. Find businesses with bad marketing and buy them up to fix them and sell to PE firms so they can improve something else they're good at.
There's a million ways to get there... choose one.

About
I started a few small physical product businesses between high school and college; carpenter bee traps, custom art, and snowboard/ski tuning, etc.
Eventually, I started sourcing white-label products overseas and selling on platforms like Etsy, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Shopify.
In two years, I got 9000+ online sales on low-ticket products. Over 2,000 five-star reviews and 99% 5-day shipping or less.
Now I'm a Direct Response Marketer.
I also write about cool ideas in my free time.
Here's the hidden door to the rabbit holes.
